.58 caliber, percussion. Lockplate marking: Eagle motif/ US/ Springfield/ 1862. Other markings include barrel markings, “1862 & “VP” & eagle head; barrel bands “U”, buttplate “US”, and two inspector cartouches stamped on the left receiver stock. Markings lightly worn, but entirely legible. All metal parts exhibit a consistent and attractive light gray patina, with light scratching & slight pitting. Solid walnut stock displays a smooth brown patina, along with numerous small nicks consistent with age & usage. Bore is dusty & lightly pitted. The Springfield Armory produced 265,000 M1861 rifle-muskets. Very good condition overall. Excellent display piece.
