Manufactured by Harpers Ferry Armory were manufactured between 1845 and 1855. They are single shot .54 caliber muzzleloaders. It has a round barrel fastened by two bands. Markings are the eagle motif / US forward of the hammer and at the rear of the lock is HARPERS/FERRY(date). Barrel is marked V, P, eaglehead and date at breech. Barrels are browned and the buttplate, patchbox, trigger guard and barrel bands all made from brass.
This is a Model 1841 dated 1845 on the lock and 1846 on the barrel. Harpers markings are sharp but the eagle is not visible. Patina on all iron is a semi-bright dusky gun metal gray. Bright bore and good rifling. Walnut has no cartouches and is not a Harpers Ferry stock. Confederate alteration in 1861 for saber bayonet, probably in Virginia.
