This original longarm is a .69 caliber Springfield Model 1842, single-shot muzzleloader in good condition. All iron surfaces have been moderately cleaned. Lockplate wears a cleaned gray-bright sheen with mild peppery rust pitting. Lock markings are standard “Eagle / US” in front of hammer and “SPRING / FIELD / 1845” behind the hammer. Mechanics very strong. Markings thin. Barrel surface cleaned wears a mottled patina. Proof marks “V / P/ Eaglehead” are very thin and barrel breech tang shows much cleaning. No date stamped on the barrel tang. Bore is dark and dusty, not rifled. All the other iron components are consistent. No cartouches are visible. Buttplate markings visible with small “US”. Black walnut full stock surface is dark and exhibits an old crack at the wrist behind the hammer. Shows a number of light scratches and scuff marks overall along with minor dings and nicks. A nice M1842 Springfield musket at a reasonable price.
