BRAZILIAN LIGHT MINI RIFLE

Item Code: 123-7029

Research has shown that this is actually the Brazilian Model 1855 Naval Rifle. Approx. 6,000 of these were imported by Herman Boker and sold in New York City in early 1861. The States of New York and Ohio purchased many. This particular weapon was purchased by the State of Ohio.

Walnut stock is in very good condition with very little signs of wear. Small of the stock is stamped “OHIO”. Above this stamping is a small brass shield, which was affixed by the importer. Above this shield the wood is stamped with an anchor flanked by a “D” and a “C.” On the side of the stock opposite the lock, below one of the brass lock screw washers, is a small trefoil and below that are the initials “T.R.” Both the buttplate and the trigger guard are made of brass. All other metal surfaces are bright with light scattered mottling. Tang of trigger guard is stamped with “DC” and anchor. Lock has “DC” and anchor stamped forward of hammer and on the side of the hammer as well.

Barrel is stamped near bolster with “DC” and anchor. The opposite side of the barrel has a Belgian Armory proof mark. Barrel is 32.00 inches long and is held in place by two barrel bands. Numbered bayonet lug is on right side near muzzle. Number is 4193. These weapons originally came with a matching numbered bayonet. Weapon was .577 but now measures out to .62. Bore is bright and clean but rifling is thin. Hammer does not hold half cock but does hold at full cock position. Nipple is original and slightly smashed. Long range leaf rear sight very much like the one found on the Plymouth Rifle. Has correct original ramrod and both sling swivels.
