Walnut stock exhibits light wear from age and use. There is a very thin, very well repaired crack in the stock running for approx. 4.75 inches from the forward edge of the lock upward toward the barrel. No cartouche mark is visible in wood opposite the lock. Brass butt plate, barrel bands and trigger guard. Lower barrel band is stamped “H F 22, 63.” Brass patch box on right side of butt. Barrel is dark with some moderate pitting near breech which obscures all markings in this area.
Lock is marked with an eagle over “U.S.” forward of the hammer. Eagle is faint due to dark area on lock. Behind the hammer is “HARPPER’S FERRY 1852.” Action is crisp. Holds at half and full cock. However, very slight pressure on the trigger will make the hammer fall. Original nipple is present. Weapon has all steel ramrod. No bayonet lug. Bore retains rifling and is dark. Rear sight is “v” notch. Both sling swivels are present. Between 1855-1860 8,879 of these weapons were bored out to .58 caliber and the ramrods replaced with the all steel version instead of the one with the brass tip. This weapon is one of that number.
