This original Civil War shoulder arm is a Colt “Special Model 1861” contract rifle musket made from 1861 to 1865 by the Colt Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. Though no serial numbers were used during the production of the M1861 Special musket, records indicate that some 100,000 such muskets were produced during that period with many supplied for various state sub-contracts.

This longarm is a percussion, .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader with the standard 40” round barrel. Markings are strong and clear with proof marks “V / P/ eagle head” on the left barrel breech facet, with “STEEL” and “E.P.R.”  A matching date “1863” stamped on top of the breech. Bore is clean and bright with good rifling. The nipple is original.

Lock plate markings are standard Colt Special markings: “U. S. / COLT’S PT F. A. MFG CO / HARTFORD, CT” in front of the hammer and “1863” date behind. All markings are clear. Spread-winged eagle stamped on flat bolster below the nipple. All gun metal exhibits a bright, smooth surface. Mechanics are strong and crisp.

Ramrod is present and complete. Musket has the standard two-leaf rear sight marked for 1, 3, and 5 hundred yards. There are three of the screw-type barrel bands all marked with a small “U”. Sling swivels at the trigger guard and the middle band. Butt plate is stamped “US”.

Black walnut stock is in good original condition. Strong wood with just a very few small dings from storage. Stock flat opposite the hammer has two strong inspector’s cartouches. Attractive dark wood tone with crisp edges and original finish. Likely never fired.

A classic M1861 Colt Special Model musket. From the Texas Civil War Museum display.   [jet][ph:L]
