P1854 AUSTRIAN LORENZ RIFLE

$2,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1268-121

This is an attractive, 100% complete and correct Austrian M-1854 Lorenz Rifle Musket, in very good condition. The Lorenz was the third most used rifle musket during the American Civil War, with US purchases in excess of 250,000 and documented CS purchases of at least 100,000.

One feature that almost assures that a Lorenz was purchased and imported by the North or the South is the absence of a cheek rest on the stock. All Austrian military purchased Lorenz rifle muskets were equipped with a cheek rest.

This gun measures approximately 52.5” long overall with a 37.25” barrel. The mostly round barrel is clean and smooth with an attractive pewter tone. The gun has a bright bore with perfect 4-groove rifling in the original Austrian 13.9mm, or .547 caliber. The top of the breech is marked with the manufacturer’s name “G. SCHLAGER” amid some light pitting and a large “157”. Additional small stamps are found on the left facet. The original helical front sight / bayonet lug is at the muzzle and the bulky flip-up sight is in place at the breech.

The lock is in very clean condition marked with a clear but unknown stamp behind the hammer, and “862” to the front, indicating that it was produced in 1862. The lock works very well on all positions and is very crisp and strong.

There are matching assembly numbers (10) and Vienna Arsenal “stars” on the barrel bands. The gun retains both original sling swivels, band springs, butt plate, and trigger assembly. The original brass-tipped Austrian ramrod in the channel under the barrel is full-length and complete with threads at the end.

The stock is also in very nice condition, with a wonderful orange-brown color to the beech wood. A few scattered dings and light wear overall as to be expected. Large initials carved into the right shoulder stock.

There is a sling on the gun; made of two old slings sewn together and of a type occasionally reused on Krag rifles.

A very fine example of Lorenz in original .547 caliber.  [jet][ph:L]
