This is a US Model 1816 Flintlock Musket converted to Percussion circa 1850 through late 1860s. Lock plate is marked “HARPERS/FERRY/1838” behind the hammer and with a small eagle over “US” forward of hammer. Conversion is officially termed the “Belgian alteration” and more commonly known to collectors as the “cone type.” The conversion was performed early 1850s with all external lock parts removed with screw holes plugged. The pan was ground flush with lock plate. Percussion muzzle screwed into threaded receptacle at top of the barrel. A distinctive arsenal, military style hammer replaced the original flint style. Sights were retrofitted to this rifled-musket and still retain a nice, deep blued finish.
All metal is mostly smooth and semi-bright, with a nice patina forming throughout. The walnut stock is in very good condition with some very minor wood loss near the barrel tang. Bore is decent and smooth with no traces of rifling. There is some minor loss of wood near the breech on the right side of the tang. Mechanically perfect with a strong action. The cone/nipple is in excellent condition with no signs of dry firing damage.
One of the more widely used weapons of the war, this is a great opportunity to add a piece of Civil War and Harpers Ferry history to your collection. [cm][ph:L]
