This Civil War era single-shot muzzleloader is a .58 caliber Harpers Ferry Model 1855 percussion 2 band rifle in fine overall condition. It has a 33” round barrel with broad three-groove rifling. Barrel is secured to the stock with two-barrel bands and band springs. All the furniture is iron. The metal is "in the bright" having been lightly cleaned decades ago. The beveled lock plate holds a large spur hammer and houses the Maynard tape primer. This system employed a waterproof paper tape of percussion caps inserted into the primer magazine held behind a hinged door. This system set a cap onto the nipple when the hammer was cocked, and the trigger pulled. The mechanics are still strong and smooth. On the face of the Maynard primer “door” the large spread-winged eagle motif is clearly visible.  The hammer has a knife-edge lip that severed the expended portion of the primer tape. Lock plate is marked with “U.S. over HARPERS FERRY” forward of the primer door while the date “1860” is behind the hammer.

The rifle has a rear sight with 2 leaves marked "R" making it correct for this model exclusively. There is an iron blade front sight. The barrel breech area is clean with minor pitting. A date of "1860" is visible on the tang as are the "V P" and eagle head proofs. The nipple and bolster screw are in place. A saber-bayonet lug is present on the right side of the barrel near the muzzle. The lock spring is crisp and tight. The bore is clean with sharp rifling. The iron ramrod is significant in that it is a Model 1842 style ramrod that has been "cupped-out" at the end to facilitate the Minie Ball. It shows period threading. This ramrod which has a patina that matches the weapon perfectly was certainly done at a Southern Armory and it is identical to ramrods adapted for rifled muskets "re-arsenaled" by Wm. Glaze of Columbia S.C. in 1861. In fact, this weapon was discovered in South Carolina over half a century ago!

The very attractive Black walnut stock is solid with no cracks or splits. The wood surface was lightly cleaned decades ago. There are no dings or gouges. The stock has a fine mellow patina. The correct inspector's cartouche is clearly visible on the flat. And a tiny circular brass escutcheon with "21" is inset on the comb, probably a "rack number".  This rifle retains both sling swivel. The butt plate is marked with a “US ".

Accompanied by very nice condition US M1855 sabre bayonet.

Seldom seen as clean and nice this 100% correct Harpers Ferry Model 1855 rifle-musket has a ramrod that indicates Confederate use.   [pe][ph:L]
