The Lorenz rifle-musket was second to the British Enfield in total numbers of longarms imported. It was a single-shot, percussion muzzle loader. Total length 52½” long.
Barrel length 37½” long, bored out to .58 caliber. Part octagon, part round barrel secured to stock with three iron bands and three band springs, all marked with assembly numbers, proof, and inspector stamps. Bore is clean with four-groove rifling.
Barrel has the mortise but the rear sight is missing. The blade front sight with bayonet lug is present at the muzzle. Side flats of barrel show various stamps.
All gun metal clean and bright, being over cleaned at some point. Beveled lockplate is dated “861” (1861) under the bolster and has a worn Austrian stamp behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong and crisp.
Sideplate marked with assembly number. Original ramrod is of the cupped variant with brass band and retains its threaded tip.
Stock is beech with typical light wood grain running throughout. Stock has usual dings and scuffs from age and use. Stock has no raised cheek-piece.
Accompanying this musket is an original Austrian socket bayonet, with its distinctive four-sided blade and diagonal mortise slot in the socket. Measures 22” overall with a 3 ¼” socket. Locking ring moves freely. Proof marks on the “elbow”. Clean and matches the musket well.
A nice Austrian M1854 Lorenz rifle-musket and bayonet. [jet][ph:L]
