Item Code: 490-7094

Among the many variations made of the Model 1841 US percussion rifle, this shoulder arm was produced under government contract by the Whitney Arms Company of New Haven, CT.

One of 26,500 such rifles produced by Whitney, this single-shot, percussion, rifled muzzleloader features a .54 caliber, 33” long round barrel. Lock plate and hammer have nice pewter color and feature markings “E. WHITNEY / U.S.” forward of the hammer. Rear of hammer is the two-line stamping “N. HAVEN / 1850”. Overall length of the weapon is 48.75” and weighs about ten pounds. The round barrel is fitted with an open rear sight at the breech and a front blade sight at the muzzle. Barrel retains a dark brown with smooth surface. Bore is clean and clear with good rifling. Date on the tang is “1850”. Marks stamped on the breech include “US / MS / VP” with “STEEL” on the left facet. Hammer/trigger mechanics remain strong and crisp.

Black walnut stock is fitted with brass furniture and a brass patchbox. All brass wears a mellow, brass patina.  Two light government cartouches are visible on the flat opposite the hammer. Stock bears usual small scattered dings from use. Brass butt plate features the “US” on the tang. Rifle retains both sling swivels and steel ramrod is original with threads and brass cap; brass cap slightly mashed.

A very attractive and unaltered “Mississippi”.   [jet] [ph:L]
