COLT SPECIAL MODEL 1861 MUSKET DATED 1863

$750.00 ON HOLD

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 1099-31

This Colt Special Model 1861 musket was made under government contract from 1861 to 1865 by the Colt Manufacturing Co. of Hartford, Connecticut.

Longarm is a .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader with the standard 40” round barrel. The surface of the barrel, like all the metal surfaces on the weapon, is dark. Rear sight is missing. Breech area around the nipple has moderate to heavy surface pitting. Breech is strongly stamped on left flat with the letter “C” and “STEEL.” There is also a strong “VP” with a faint eagle head. Barrel date has been obliterated by pitting from use. Eagle on bolster is very faint and worn. Nipple looks to be the original. Breech plug tang does not match the rest of the barrel, has a small “D” inspection stamp, and may be a period replacement.

Bore has no rifling left and is dirty. Barrel is secured by three iron bands but only one is “U” stamped. All three screw at bottom. There are no band springs on this model. Sling swivels are present on trigger guard and upper band. Upper sling swivel is a period replacement.

Lock plate has strong markings of “U. S. / COLTS’ Pt F. A. Mfg Co / HARTFORD, CT.” forward of the hammer. Behind the hammer is “1863” in strong clear numerals. Action has both half and full cock but safety at half cock does not work. Hammer holds at full cock and falls properly.

Black walnut stock shows nice color and tone. There are the typical small old chips, dings and dents from age and use. The fore stock has been completely cut under the lower barrel band, but displays fine. Stock flat opposite the hammer has two faint government inspector cartouches. Lock screws are original and show no wear. Left side of the shoulder stock has a large “T” carved in the wood.

Buttplate has a good “US” stamped on the tang.

Original ramrod is present with the threaded tip, but is short and is likely from another type of musket.    [ad/jet] [ph:L]
