This is an English Pattern 1853 rifle musket that was imported into the country and used during the Civil War. Likely imported into the North and then “captured or collected” by Confederate forces. It was then “cleaned and/or repaired” and reissued to a Southern soldier. This rifle is complete and in well-used condition.
The round barrel is 39” long. The surface has turned a dark brown with pitting at the breech and scattered small dings along its length. Front blade sight and flip-up, long-range rear leaf sight with sliding bar remain in place. Viewer marks (“25” and small crowns) are crisp and clear on the left side of the barrel at breech. Bore is dark and dirty but with rifling visible.
The lockplate is dark gray and mottled with good tight fit to the stock. Clearly stamped “1862 / TOWER” in front of the hammer; a large crown is stamped behind. Hammer and trigger mechanics remain strong. The nipple has been hammered down.
All three of the barrel bands are present as are the two sling swivels. Correct ramrod is present with threaded tip. Brass nose cap, butt plate, washers, and trigger guard are present, in fine condition, with dark patina.
English walnut stock is complete and solid, but used condition. The stock is covered overall with small dings and dents from hard use. There are no cracks or breaks. The Birmingham stock maker’s name is found on the underside of the butt, “COOPER & GOODMAN”. The only other intentional mark on the gun it the Confederate inspection stamp just ahead of the trigger guard.
A “&” inspection stamp is found on the underside of the stock just ahead of the trigger guard tang. This mark signifies that this weapon was recovered and turned in to the Confederate Ordnance Bureau for at least cleaning, and/or for some type of repair. The “&” is not one of the most commonly found stamps, but is acknowledged as authentic. See Steve Knott’s “Captured & Collected” book for the complete Confederate “captured, repaired, and reissued” weapons story. [jet]
