Item Code: 2024-622

Serial number 205830, this Model 1892 Winchester rifle is .38 WCF, marked on the barrel, was made in 1902 and rates about fine for condition with 30 percent or better original finish. The barrel is fully round and the magazine is full length, both showing lots of original blue, thinning a bit and shifting a toward plum beyond the forestock and showing some slight rubbing on the left. Front and rear buckhorn sight are in place. The receiver shows thin, faded blue on the sides, hammer and the lever, with the raised edges of the receiver rubbed toward silver and gray, as is part of the underside of the receiver toward the front, from handling. The stock tip shows bright. The tang shows lighter as well, though the lettering is sharp as are all the markings on the rifle: “MANUFACTURED BY THE / WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.  NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.” – on the barrel; “38 W.C.F.” on the barrel breech; “MODEL 1892 / - WINCHESTER - / PAT. OCT. 14. 1884” on the receiver tang.

The wood has a tight fit to the metal, nice color and grain. The forestock shows a tad lighter than the buttstock from handling but has a very pleasing warmth. The buttstock has some small handling dings, mainly on the lower right. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is clean, with good rifling.

A lighter frame version of the M1886 with same chambering as the M1873, the Model ‘92 was manufactured from 1892 to 1941. With slightly over a million produced in a number of calibers and many variations, they are a good collecting category in themselves and remain popular among hunters and shooters.  [sr] [ph:L]
