This Model 1816 Harpers Ferry .69 caliber smoothbore is in original flintlock form.
The musket has a 41” round barrel secured with three barrel-bands that in turn are held in place with iron band springs. Smoothbore is dark and dirty. Front sight mounted on the upper barrel band. A small bayonet lug is also mounted on top of barrel at muzzle. “VP” with worn eagle head on left breech. The breech tang is clearly stamped “1837”.
The lockplate is marked “HARPERS / FERRY / 1837” behind the hammer. Forward of the hammer there is a deeply stamped eagle motif with “US” below. The jaw still holds a flint wrapped in a new piece of leather. Pan, frizzen, and feather spring all remain in place and operate as they should. Jaw/trigger mechanics remain strong.
An old “button head” ramrod is in the channel under the barrel with 6 or 8 inches of the threaded end cut off. Both sling swivels, one at the middle band and one in front of the trigger guard bow are present. Butt plate, trigger guard, side plate, barrel bands, and all gun metal share a matching bright-ish gray and brown patina with scattered dark spotting overall. Butt plate tang shows worn “US” stamp.
Black walnut stock has good original color. Most edges remain strong. There are two short hairline cracks (0.75” or shorter) running back from the back of the lockplate. There is also an old repaired chip between the breech and the jaw. There are a couple of small places along the ramrod channel and at the junction of the barrel bands that are worn or were shaved down long ago. Several small inspector stamps are found on the underside and on the left flat. Overall, the stock is in nice condition.
A great Harpers Ferry musket in original flint condition! [jet] [ph:L]
