Here is a .35 caliber, Maynard “Improved Hunting or Target Rifle, Number 9” by Massachusetts Arms Company. The single-shot, breech-loading Maynard rifle used a thick-rim primed metallic cartridge and was the invention of Edward Maynard who patented his first model carbine in 1851. His carbines were widely used during the Civil War.
This weapon measures nearly 42” long overall with a black walnut shoulder stock. The round, 26” long, barrel includes a 4” long octagonal section at the breech. Barrel remains tight with no wobble at the receiver hinge. Bore is clean with just a few small patches of pitting about midway; good rifling.
There is a 3 ½” long, folding peep sight, a standard open rear sight, and a blade front sight. Gunmetal has a wonderful plumb color. Some original case color on the frame. Frame is stamped “MANUFACTURED BY / MASS ARMS CO. / CHICKOPEE FALLS. / 1882” on the right side. Stamped on the left is “EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / DEC 6, 1859 / 1873”. Weapon has no sling bar with saddle ring. Iron buttplate. Hammer/trigger mechanics are strong and crisp.
Walnut shoulder stock is untouched and exhibits a pleasing patina.
A fine example of a Maynard sporting rifle. [jet] [ph:L]
