The barrel is turning a plumb brown with scattered areas of the original bright finish underneath. The front sight is present at the muzzle and the rear sight has the proper two flip up leaves. Left flat of the breech has a faint “VP” with a stronger eagle head. Top of the barrel has a good “1863” stamp. The eagle on the bolster is also good. Nipple is original with very little pitting around the bolster. Bore has nice rifling but is dirty and needs scrubbed.
The lock plate matches the barrel in appearance. It has a strong stamping of a spread winged eagle and a very strong “US” over “SPRINGFIELD forward of the hammer while behind it there is a good “1863.” Action is good. Lock plate screws and hammer screws show little wear.
The wood stock is in good condition. There are no cracks but there are the usual dings and dents. The wood behind the breech is stamped with a number “24.” No cartouche marks are visible. Some original feathering remains throughout. Iron butt plate has a good “US” stamped on the tang. Both sling swivels are present. All three barrel bands are semi-bright and bear their “U” markings. Bands are held in place by screws that are in good condition.
The original iron ramrod is full length with the threads present at bottom. [ad][ph:L]
