Very Good example of a very uncommon pre-war 7.92mm Kar-98k service rifle made in 1939. Principal markings include: “7871h” (serial number); “243” (manufacturer); “1939” (date of manufacture); eagle over “26” (military acceptance stamps); “Mod. 98” (model: Karabiner Model 1898); eagle over “H” (army property mark); “M’GLYNN” (likely the American serviceman who retained the rifle as a war souvenir; his last name is carved neatly in the left side of the stock below the rear sight). Since the rifle was made in 1939, the overall manufacturing quality is exceptional – and without the production shortcuts and cheaper materials used later in the war.
The best part is this rifle is fully functioning and all the serial numbers match! All the bolt sub-components have been checked and they all match down to the firing pin.
The condition is Very Good with thinning blue overall from service use. The bore is exceptional with strong rifling. The stock is excellent with only light handling marks. All the stock inspection stamps, Army property mark, and the serial number are legible on the stock, though a few are faint. The cleaning rod is original, but a later war replacement as it has no serial number.
As designated by the “243” manufacturer’s code, the rifle was made by Mauser Berlin-Borsigwalde. Mauser-Berlin manufactured 237,700 Kar-98k rifles in 1939; based on the serial number, this rifle was made in May 1939.
All-matching pre-war Kar-98K rifles rarely come on the market! Quality examples from the 1930s have become very scarce in recent years and finding a nice rifle in Very Good condition is not easy. As such, this is an excellent opportunity to own a collector grade classic German rifle made just prior to the German invasion of Poland and a veteran of the entire war! [SK] [PH:L]
