This is a Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle musket in good condition. Produced by the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts.
All gun metal on this rifle has matching wear and color. The color being semi-bright with scattered darker spotting with patches of fine pitting. The 40” long barrel has the original two-leaf rear sight and small lug/blade front sight. Barrel shows surface pitting around the breech and bolster and the matching “1862” date is visible amid the pitting. Proof marks “V / P / eagle head” are visible on left facet of the breech. Barrel bore is clear and bright with strong rifling.
A spread-winged eagle motif is clearly stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster. Under the bolster is a strong, “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD”. Behind the hammer is the date, “1862”. Hammer/trigger mechanics are crisp and strong. Screw heads are in good shape. Butt plate bears a strong “US”. Swelled shank, tulip-head steel ramrod is original with threaded end. Barrel bands, sling swivels, etc. are all in very good, matching condition.
Black walnut full stock is in very good condition overall. Stock exhibits two very light inspector cartouches on the flat. There are no cracks and only the usual dings and dents from use and storage. Wood retains attractive color and finish.
A good, original example of a true Springfield-made musket of the Civil War. [jet] [ph:L]
