This is the Model 1847 “Artillery” Musketoon, produced by the Springfield Armory circa 1848 to 1859, with a total production of 3,359.
The musket is a .69 caliber, smoothbore, single-shot muzzleloader that measures 41” long overall with a 26” long round barrel. The barrel exhibits proof marks “V / P/ Eaglehead” on the left breech along with a partial date “18__” visible on the barrel tang. Barrel has a smooth pewter tone with a number of small scattered dings. Bayonet lug at the muzzle is worn down. Bore has a dusty tone with light pitting.
Barrel is secured to the stock via two flat barrel bands, a double-strapped upper band and a lower band with sling swivel. This swivel appears to have been reattached. The lower swivel is screwed in on the underside of the shoulder stock near the buttplate. Iron buttplate is stamped “US”. Ramrod is complete with threaded end. All components are iron and wear a matching light gray patina.
The lock plate is flat with beveled edges and exhibits a surface that features a fine, light gray color. Lock markings are the standard spread-winged eagle over “US” in front of the hammer and “SPRING / FIELD / 1847” behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong and crisp.
The stock is black walnut with an oil finish and is in good condition with usual dents and dings> There is heavier wear in places and there is a “Y” shaped carving on the left side of the shoulder stock. The flat opposite hammer exhibits one very faint remnant of a government inspector cartouche.
A solid example of the U.S. Model 1847 Artillery musketoon. [jet] [ph:L]
