This rifle is in good condition, with a couple of small alterations and showing handling marks as would be expected from years of service. There are clear markings, and a pleasing overall tone to the wood and metal.
The round barrel has a nice, even plum brown tone, with the bands being slightly darker. The metal is smooth, showing two small vise marks. Both sights and all bands and springs are in place. There is no swivel on the middle band. This and the lower swivel were both intentionally removed. Bore is clear with strong rifling. These fired the .52 caliber “56-56” copper rimfire cartridge.
The receiver has smooth, dark metal showing a mix of browns and grays. The markings on top of the receiver read: “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO BOSTON MASS / PAT’d MARCH 6, 1860”, and the serial number on the wrist, 23894, is sharp. Action functions as it should, with smooth breech block action. Here is the second old alteration. The cartridge case ejection rail has been modified or replaced. The original featured a cut in the end which left thin “arms” on the left and right sides. These likely broke or bent and the current part is either a replacement or, more likely, had the end ground smooth; as it is just that amount shorter. The pin holding this rail in place sticks out slightly on the left side.
The buttstock shows minor dings. There are two faint cartouches visible in the wood behind the lower lockplate screw. The forestock shows similar, if not slightly more, wear. Spring loaded cartridge magazine that held seven cartridges, is present and in fine working order.
This is a good example of one of the most revolutionary weapons to see field service in the war and would be a key piece in any Civil War collection or display. [jet] [ph:L]
