Originally called “Lucifers” due to the sulfuric smell when struck, matches were a high demand, highly popular item among Civil War Soldiers.  They were initially distributed in strips, 17 matches to one strip.  Typically, 5 strips would be considered a ‘brick’ or one pack.  However, it was common for matches to be sold in individual strips, and several of the strips could be sold in a bundle wrapped in wax paper. When ready to use, soldiers would break away one match to strike.  To keep matches dry, soldiers would often carry metal container called a match safe.

The pack here is in good condition with 3 match strips each containing 17 matches.  The matches ends are tapered and dipped in material for striking.   Each match measures approximately 2 ¼” tall.  Has original brown paper loosely wrapped around them.  [mk] [ph:L]
