US MODEL 1812 SPRINGFIELD TYPE II, DATED 1816

$2,295.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 160-31

Single shot, muzzle-loading Model 1812 Type II, also known as the Standard Pattern Type II.  In original flint condition in untouched condition. All the metal surfaces on this weapon have a matching black patina.

The 42.00 inch .69 round barrel has a smooth dark patina with a visible “P” over an eagle head over “V” proof mark at the breech. This area also has light surface rust. The bayonet lug is present on top of the muzzle. Brass blade front sight is mounted at the rear of the double-strapped front band. Bore is dark and dirty with wadding stuck in the bottom of the breech.

The lock plate and its parts match the barrel in color. The plate itself is rounded and beveled at the front with a rear that is pointed. Visible behind the hammer is a very strong stamping of “1816” while forward of the hammer is a worn script “US” over a faint spread-winged eagle over a slightly upward curving “SPRINGFIELD.” Lock has a removable iron pan with fence that shows some light surface rust. Iron frizzen does not have a bend in the top and works properly. Hammer is complete with jaws and tightening screw. A broken flint is present. Action works well.

The wood stock is dark with a low comb and a shallow check rest. There are two faint oval cartouches, one on the raised area opposite the lock and one behind the trigger guard. The wood surface has the usual dings and dents consistent with age. There is some wear to the wood surface along the barrel tang as well as a small piece of wood missing in this area, but it is an old imperfection. Barrel bands are dark and match the barrel and the lock surfaces. All three barrel bands are held in place with iron studs instead of band springs. Both sling swivels are missing. The mount for the rear swivel is present in front of the trigger guard. Trigger guard is of one piece construction. Butt plate is dark and matches the rest of the iron on the weapon. Buttplate tang is dated “1816.”

Buttonhead ramrod is original and full length. All screws are original to the weapon and show light, if any, wear.

A very nice early example of the Model 1812 Type II. [AD] [ph:L]
