Longarm specimen is an original M1816, dated 1818. Although the lock does not bear the maker’s name we know it was made by Pomeroy of Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Musket is a .69 caliber, single shot muzzleloader that retains all its original parts in good condition. The iron lock is round in the front and slightly pointed at the tail. Lock plate is marked with a spread-winged eagle over “US” forward of the hammer with “1818” behind the hammer. Frizzen has proper bend at top and the pan is brass with no fence which is also correct. Hammer has a replaced flint. Action works well. All metal parts of the lock have a dark patina.
Musket has a 42” long round barrel secured to the black walnut stock by three iron bands. Barrel surface has a beautiful plumb finish with almost no pitting. Breech has stampings at the left side that read “US / NORTH CAROLINA / P” over “V.”
The lower sling swivel is mounted to a post just forward the large trigger guard with the second being attached to the middle barrel band. Bore is dark with light rust pitting that should clean up some. Original button-head ramrod is present with threaded end.
Black walnut stock is dark, uncleaned and original with the correct low comb but no inspector’s cartouche is visible. Overall, the stock has some minor dings and chips consistent with age. There is an expertly repaired surface crack running from the escutcheon opposite the lock, over the wrist at the base of the comb, and ending at the rear of the lock. This is very faint and barely noticeable and looks more like a scratch than a closed crack. The wood still shows a lot of original feathering. [ad] [ph:L]
