TWO-THIRDS SIZE PAINTED EAGLE DRUM

This drum is painted in the regulation pattern familiar from a number of Civil War makers. An American eagle is set in a rectangular blue panel with a U.S. shield on its chest, spread wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons, and holding a white-bordered red banderole in its beak, with a glory of sun rays shooting up above a band of clouds above with small white stars around the eagle’s head. The drum has its heads, flesh hoops, rims, rope and tighteners, and measures 12 inches tall and 14 inches in diameter, putting it in the 2/3 size range that has known wartime use, but in this case was likely done for private use in a militia group, military academy or veterans’ organization.

The painting was professionally done and shows scattered chips and bits of inpainting, but is still attractive. Some losses result from it being applied to a veneered surface that has chipped away in some spots. It does not have the usual brass tacks securing the overlap and the vent hole appears at the top center of the shield on the eagle’s chest, indicating the painting was well planned using a plain commercial drum for the purpose. The leather tighteners/ears are modern additions for display, but the twisted rope has age. The upper head has age and may be original to the drum or an old replacement (as many are,) though the bottom head, like the tighteners, is a more recent addition for display. There is evidence of a snare on the bottom, but it has not been replaced.

We see no interior label or maker address, but the paint has a very pleasing patina and the drum shows very well. [sr][ph:L]
