TINTYPE (IN CDV MOUNT) OF A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER “PETER JONES”

$1,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1138-911

This is a tintype mounted in a carte de visite frame. Waist-up view of Jones in uniform. He wears a forage cap, single-breasted jacket and holds a revolver. Buttons were gilded. Image is clear but slightly dark. Mount shows wear; has "Traveling" Photographer's imprint on bottom edge. Identified in ink on the back, "Peter Jones / Uncle".

An ambrotype of this same image is in the Library of Congress collection. They have an unverified 12th Virginia Infantry identification associated with the image. While the man in the photo is Peter Jones, no soldiers of that name are found in the 12th VA rosters. There were 25 "Peter Jones" that fought with the Confederacy; ten were from Virginia.

This presents the question whether the inscription on the back should be interpreted to mean “Uncle Peter Jones”, or “Peter Jones’ uncle”?

From the William Turner collection.  [jet] [ph:L]
