The barrel has a bright surface with light peppering and oxidation along its length and moderate pitting at the breech which obscures the barrel date. Long rear sight has flip-up leaf with sidling aperture. Front iron blade sight is present at muzzle. Left barrel flat is stamped with a very faint “VP” and eagle head. Bore is clean with good rifling.
The lock is semi-bright and matches the barrel in appearance. There is a crisp “1858” stamped behind the hammer. Forward of the hammer, on the Maynard tape primer door is a strong spread-winged eagle and forward of that a strong “U.S.” over “HARPERS FERRY” Action and Maynard mechanism work properly. Nipple is original but dark. Clean out screw is good.
The wood stock is in very nice condition with only very minor signs of age, storage and wear. Left side of the stock has two faint inspector’s cartouche marks. One is oval in shape and the other is a rectangle.
All three barrel bands are present and marked with a horizontal “U.” Both sling swivels are present. Trigger guard and buttplate match the barrel and lock. Buttplate tang has a strong “US.” Tulip shaped swelled shank ramrod is full length and the threads are present at bottom. Stock nose cap is of brass. [ad] [ph:L]
