MODEL 1842 HARPER’s FERRY RIFLED MUSKET DATED 1854

$3,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 218-587

This is the first regulation model of musket made in the percussion ignition system at the national armories. Springfield Armory produced 172,000 of these muskets between 1844 and 1855. It was a big step forward in having fully interchangeable parts even though they were manufactured at both Springfield and Harpers Ferry. The total quantity of these muskets that were rifled numbered just over 14,000 units. Slightly less than 10,000 were fitted with long range rear sights.

This is an original Harper’s Ferry Model 1842, .69 caliber rifled bore musket with a long range rear sight. It has a ramrod that was altered for elongated riffled balls. It is in overall fine condition. The metal surfaces all have an attractive uniform appearance.

Lock has a deep  spread winged eagle over a small "US" forward the hammer as well as a deep "Harper’s Ferry 1854" to the rear of  the hammer. Mechanics are strong, crisp and work great.

Barrel surface wears a pleasing appearance. On the breech the "VP" over an eagle proof mark is deep clear, and the Harper’s Ferry “PB over P” inspector marks are present and show wear. The date "1854" is deep and clear on the barrel tang. Breech area near the nipple and bolster area are in fine condition. The rifled bore has deep rifling.

The stock shows an attractive dark color with very good edges. It has an inspector mark of J.R. to the rear of the trigger guard. This may be John Rowe who worked at Harper’s Ferry. There are small dings, dents and scuffs that are visible from normal use and storage. It has no cracks or splits visible. It has “W.F.H.” carved on the rear of the butt stock.

All barrel bands, sling swivels, band springs and trigger assembly are original. This musket retains its original steel ram rod with excellent threads. Butt plate is marked with a clear US on the tang.

This original, rifled and sighted Model 1842 Harpers” Ferry dated 1854 in fine overall condition. It would be a wonderful addition to any Prewar or Civil War collection. [KN] [ph:L]
