NAMED US MODEL 1870 TRAPDOOR SPRINGFIELD RIFLE

$1,295.00

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 490-2582

Rifle is a .50 centerfire with a 32.50 inch barrel that is bright with light scattered mottling. Proper front sight is present as is the blued leaf sight with sliding aperture at rear. Bore has very good rifling and is mostly clean but does have some light scattered dirt that should clean up. Barrel is stamped on the left side of the breech with number “32542” which matches the number stamper on the forward left side of the breechblock.

Top of the breechblock is stamped with a strong “1870” over an eagle head over crossed arrows over “U.S.” Loading gate operates properly as does the action.

Lock plate is nicely marked forward of the hammer with a spread-winged eagle and “U.S.” over “SPRINGFIELD.” Behind the hammer the date of “1863” is clearly seen.

The wood stock is dark and shows the usual slight signs of age such as small dings, dents, scratches and several small gouges. There is one closed crack running in a loop from the back of the lock around to the barrel tang. The flat opposite the lock bear the carved name “J. B. DUNKLE” and “CO E  5 R.”

Both barrel bands are present and stamped with a horizontal “U” and both sling swivels are present as is the cleaning rod. Trigger guard and buttplate match the rest of the iron on the weapon. Buttplate tang is stamped with a good “U.S.”

A quick internet search failed to turn up more information on the name carved on the stock. [ad] [ph:L]
