This is an extremely nice copy of the classic brass-framed 1866 Winchester or “Yellow Boy” rifle, the successor the Henry and forerunner of the 1873 and later classic types, but was popular and manufactured right up to 1898 with a total production around 170,000. This one was imported by Navy Arms and is marked on the barrel: “Navy Arms Co. Ridgefield N.J. Made in Italy.” This is the rifle configuration with 24-inch octagonal barrel and is in the correct .44-40 caliber, serial numbered 35550 on the lower tang.
Front sight and rear ladder sight are in place and complete. The blue on the barrel, magazine tube, and lever is very good. The brass has a wonderful aged patina. The screw heads show excellent blue, though the lower tang screw shows gray and some brown from holding the rifle. The wood has at tight fit to the metal, nice warm brown color and varnish. The forestock is excellent. The buttstock shows some handling marks: one scratch on the right and several on the left from wear against the shooter’s body, with a few small dings along the bottom edge and one small wear spot to the varnish. Action is perfect, as is the bore, which is minty, bright and no pitting.
This is pretty rifle and the patina to the brass is immediately striking. It looks like it would be fun to shoot, and naturally requires an FFL. [sr] [ph:L]
