This is a bolt-action, magazine rifle. Manufactured between 1898 and 1903 with a total quantity of 330,000 produced. This specimen is serial numbered 246988 and mas made in 1900.
30” round barrel retains much of its original blue. The tall front blade sight sits just forward of the double front barrel band. Band has stacking swivel and bayonet lug attached to underside. The 1902 style rear sight with flip up leaf and windage adjustments. In addition to the double front band the barrel is also held in place by a single barrel band. This band is stamped with a horizontal “U” and holds the forward sling swivel.
Receiver also has a good bit of original finish and the left side is stamped “US” over “1898 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY” and serial number 246988. Bolt and magazine operate perfectly as does safety. Both bolt and magazine are in good, clean condition. The bore has some light dirt and pitting.
Wood stock is dark and appears untouched. Wood has a few of the usual small dings and scratches from age use and storage. There is a clear cartouche on the left side and a fancy “P” within a circle stamped behind the trigger guard. Second sling swivel is mounted on underside of butt. Butt plate with hinged door for cleaning rod (no cleaning rod). Stenciled in red paint on top of comb is, “7 / K / 75”.
Very attractive weapon. FFL back ground check needed to purchase. [jet] [ph:L]
