The Krag-Jorgensen is a repeating bolt action rifle designed by in the late 19th century. It was adopted as a standard arm by Norway, Denmark, and the United States. Around 500,000 "Krags" were produced at the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts from 1894 to 1904. The Krag–Jorgensen rifle in .30 caliber found use in the Boxer Rebellion, the Spanish–American War and the Philippine–American War. A few carbines were used by United States cavalry units fighting Apaches in New Mexico Territory and preventing poaching in Yellowstone National Park. Two-thousand rifles were taken to France by the United States Army 10th–19th engineers (railway) during World War I; but there is no evidence of use by front-line units during that conflict.
Offered here is the Model 1898 rifle in excellent condition. A total quantity of 330,000 were manufactured between 1898 and 1903. 30” round barrel, blued. High profile blade sight at muzzle. Model 1902 adjustable rear sight. Bore is bright and clean with strong rifling. Two barrel bands; lower has sling swivel, and upper has stacking swivel and bayonet lug.
Receiver retains original mottled case colors with right side loading door. Left side strongly stamped “U.S. / MODEL 1898. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. 187523”. Bolt is bright and clean with straight handle.
All other gun metal parts remain all or mostly blued. Butt plate shows the most wear of all parts (which is still very little wear). Hinged door for cleaning rod is in butt plate, no cleaning rod.
Oil finished walnut stock is also in fine condition with just a few dings. Strong inspector’s cartouche on left side with 1899 date. A small number and a script “P” within a circle is stamped below the trigger guard on the underside.
Overall this is a beautiful rifle.
