This Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle musket is complete, and in very good condition. Produced by the Providence Tool Company in Rhode Island.
All gun metal on this rifle is matching clean and smooth with silver/light gray color. There is some scattered “finger printing” on the barrel. A light spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster. On either side of the eagle is “U.” and “S.” Under this is the maker’s stamp, “PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. / PROVIDENCE, R.I.” Behind the hammer is the date, “1864”. The 40” long barrel has the original two-leaf rear sight and small lug/blade front sight. Barrel shows no pitting around the breech and bolster and is strongly stamped “1864” at the top of the breech. Proof marks “V / P / eagle head” are strong on left facet of the breech. Barrel bore is semi-bright but with scattered oxidation. Strong rifling.
Screw heads are in good shape. Butt plate bears a strong outlined “US”. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Retains its original swelled shank, tulip-head steel ramrod with a threaded end. Many components have small sub-inspector marks on them. Barrel bands, sling swivels, etc. are all in good condition.
Black walnut full stock is in similar good condition overall. Has clean edge contours on the flat opposite the hammer. Stock exhibits two strong inspector cartouches on the flat. There are no cracks and only minor dings and dents from use and storage. Wood retains good color with a few dirty streaks.
A good contract musket of the Civil War. [jet] [ph:L]
