This is a Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle musket in good condition. Produced by E. Remington & Sons, Ilion, New York. Remington produced 40,000 rifles from 1864 to 1866.
All gun metal on this rifle has matching wear and color. The color being a tarnished pewter with very fine pin point pitting. A spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster with “U.S.” beneath. Under the bolster is stamped, “REMINGTON’S / ILION, N.Y.” Behind the hammer is the date, “1865”.
The 40” long barrel has the original two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Barrel shows matching “1865” date with proof marks “V / P / eaglehead” visible on left facet of the breech. Bore is clear and bright with strong rifling; minor pitting near muzzle.
Screw heads are in good shape. Butt plate bears a strong “US”. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Swelled shank, tulip-head steel ramrod is original and complete with threaded end. Barrel bands, sling swivels, etc. are all in very good, matching condition.
Black walnut full stock is in very good condition overall. Stock exhibits no cartouches. There are two old gouges at the middle barrel band and some minor loss to edges of ramrod channel at ramrod swell. Wood retains attractive original color and finish.
A good, original example of a Model 1861 rifle musket made at the end of the Civil War. [jet] [ph:L]
