The .50 caliber Gallager carbine saw extensive use during the Civil War with total production going over 17,000.

The weapon offered here has a walnut butt stock with iron butt plate and patch-box. Wood has deep color and original finish. Moderate dings and dents. A chip missing along butt plate tang. There is a shallow carved-out area on left side. No inspector’s cartouches remain to be seen.

The 22 ¼” round barrel has base of rear sight in place but flip-up tabs are missing. A thick blade front sight is mounted at the muzzle. Surface is smooth with dark brown patina. Lever action operates smoothly and hammer / trigger action remains strong. Screw heads are good. Bore has light pitting but sharp rifling.  Lock shows a few scattered patches of light pitting and is marked “GALLAGER / PATENTED JULY 17th, 1860.” Stamped under this is the serial number “2747”; an early production number. Heavy sling bar and ring remain on left side.

This is a solid Gallager carbine with low enough serial number to have seen service.  [jet] [ph:L]
