This is a Model 1842, .69 caliber, musket manufactured at the Harpers Ferry armory. These were made from 1844 to 1855 and just over 100,000 were made at Harpers Ferry.
The barrel is a full 42” in length and in overall nice smooth condition. Very little pitting around breech and bolster area. A slightly worn 1847 date on the breech tang. Viewer and proof marks remain clearly stamped on left breech. Inspector’s initials show some wear. The bore is clean with good rifling. The original ramrod is present; complete with threaded end alteration to ram minie balls.
Between 1856 and 1859 some 14,000 of these smoothbore muskets were altered at Harpers Ferry or Springfield. The typical alteration was to rifle the barrels and modify the ramrod to accommodate the pointy shape of the new minie ball ammunition. Most guns also had a long-range rear sight added. This musket was one of approximately 4,000 that did not have the rear sight added.
The hammer and lock plate are in good condition exhibiting typical wear. The spread-winged eagle and US stamp stand out well. “HARPERS / FERRY / 1847” is stamped behind the hammer. Mechanical action is crisp and strong.
All metal parts: barrel bands, band springs, trigger guard, butt plate, and swivels are present. Gun metal is mostly bright with scattered age spotting on all.
The walnut stock is fine condition showing original color. Dings and scratches commensurate with age. Two inspector’s cartouches are visible on left flat.
This is a good, altered, Model 1842 musket. [jet] [ph:L]
