Model 1842, .69 caliber musket manufactured at Harpers Ferry. The barrel is a full 42” in length and in overall nice smooth condition. Pitting around breech and bolster area as is to be expected. Originally smoothbore, the barrel was later rifled and ramrod altered. No long-range rear sight was ever added. Worn viewer’s proof with eagle head on breech. The breech plug tang features the year “1848”. The original ramrod is present and was altered by milling out the end to accommodate a Minie ball. The threaded end remains in good shape. The hammer and lock plate are in good condition. The US and eagle remain clearly visible. “HARPERS / FERRY / 1847” is stamped behind the hammer. Mechanics are good, but half-cock does not hold well. Butt plate is stamped with small san serif “US”. All other metal parts: barrel bands, band springs, trigger guard, and swivels are present and in good condition. All gun metal has a dark brown/gray patina. The bore is dark with only small spots of oxidation. Rifling remains strong.
The walnut stock is in good condition with no cracks or breaks. Moderate dings and dents scattered overall. Several random initials carved into stock. Two cartouches are visible on the flat opposite the lock plate. Gunstock is solid with original color and finish.
This is a good example of an 1842 smoothbore (that was later rifled) from Harpers Ferry Armory. [jet]
