This Colt Special Model 1861 musket was made under government contract from 1861 to 1865 by the Colt Manufacturing Co. of Hartford, Connecticut.
Longarm is a .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader with the standard 40” round barrel. The surface of the barrel, like all the metal surfaces on the weapon, are semi bright with light scattered mottling. Rear sight has both flip up leaves. Front blade sight is present at muzzle. Breech area around the nipple has moderate to heavy surface pitting. Breech is strongly stamped on left flat with “E.P.R.” and “STEEL.” There is also a crisp “VP” with eagle head. Top of breech is dated “1864.” Eagle on bolster is visible but worn. Nipple has a threaded body and looks to be a period replacement. Bore has fair rifling but is dirty and has a deep ring inscribed in its surface about a third of the way down the barrel. Barrel is secured by three iron bands each marked with a strong “U” stamping and screws at bottom. There are no band springs on this model. Sling swivels are present on trigger guard and middle band
Lock plate has strong markings of “U. S. / COLTS’ Pt F. A. Mfg Co / HARTFORD, CT.” forward of the hammer. Behind the hammer is “1864” in strong clear numerals. Action is crisp and holds at half and full cock and falls properly when trigger is squeezed.
Black walnut stock is in good original condition and shows scattered minor imperfections from age and use. No sign of any cracks however there are several old chips, dings and dents but nothing serious. Stock flat opposite the hammer has two faint government inspector cartouches. Lock screws are original and show no wear. Wood lines are fair.
Buttplate has a good “US” stamped on the tang.
Original ramrod is present and is full length with the threaded tip. Ramrod is hard to draw, barrel bands need loosened a bit. [ad]
