Weapon is in overall very nice clean condition.
Overall the weapon meas. approx. 40.75 inches. The round smoothbore barrel meas. to .70 caliber and is approx. 26.00 inches long. The barrel surface is semi-bright with light scattered surface pitting along most of its length with some surface discoloration from oxidation. The barrel is anchored by two brass barrel bands. The front band is a double band and mounts the front sight on the forward most band. Breech has “VP” and eagle head proofs with a barrel date of 1850. Original nipple is present. Bore is mostly clean but does have some built up dirt about halfway down.
The lock is in a little nicer condition than the barrel. It matches in color and oxidation but does not have as much pitting. Forward of the hammer is a spread-winged eagle over a small “U S” and behind the hammer is a good “SPRINGFIELD 1848.” Action works properly.
The stock is in good condition. Looking it over one will notice some original feathering still visible as well as several small scratches and dings. Just forward of the lock there is a very small chip in the wood but this is old and not very noticeable. The top of the butt has a noticeable dark discoloration. This appears to be from oil that was used for cleaning the bore that then ran onto the wood. The left side of the stock is missing the bar and ring. Left side also has one faint inspector’s oval mark.
Button head iron ramrod is full length and attached by two swivel arms and operates properly.
A not often encountered weapon in good condition. [ad]

This is a very nice CDV photograph of Charles E. Crow in Confederate uniform. It appears to be a second-generation image; photo of an existing photo. Regardless, the picture is clear with good contrast. Crow wears a Confederate 2nd lieutenant's,… (1138-988). Learn More »
