This is an original Model 1808 musket, dated 1810, made by Ethan Stillman of Burlington, CT. Musket is approximately a .71 caliber, single shot muzzleloader very in good condition. One of approximately 1885 muskets delivered under contract.
The iron lockplate is dated “1810” behind the hammer and “US / [eagle motif] / STILLMAN” in front of the hammer. Flat hammer (cock) is undecorated as is the flat lockplate. The original cock, frizzen, springs, and pan are original. No flint under the jaw.
Musket has a 44½” long barrel secured to the black walnut stock by three iron bands. Round barrel remains in good condition with pitting around touch hole. This touch hole is quite large, possibly 3/16” in diameter. Barrel breech is stamped at the left side with “US” over a recessed oval with and eagle head and “CT” inside, over a “V”. Bore is dirty.
Both sling swivels are missing. Ramrod has counter sunk button head and is only 31” long with a portion of the threaded end broken off and missing. All gun metal wears a dark gray patina with scattered mottling overall.
The dark, uncleaned, black walnut stock is in good condition overall with normal dings and dents accumulated with service and age. Of note is a small chip in front of the lock plate that continues as a 2” crack running toward the trigger guard. Additionally, a 6” long crack on the left side runs from the barrel channel behind the lower band to the escutcheon side plate. Stock flat still maintains its relative sharpness along the edges and has a light cartouche remaining on the flat.
This is a good M1808 Stillman flintlock musket typically used by militia in the early 19th century. [jet]
