The Model 1889 was the first Marlin lever action to have a solid top frame and side ejection. The rifle came with a number of options such as special sights, deluxe stocks, various magazine lengths and barrel shapes as well as several calibers.
The Model 1889 offered here is of the more common pattern. It has a round 24 inch barrel that is 38-40 caliber. Barrel has Buckhorn rear sight and a front blade sight. Originally blued the barrel now wears a smooth gray appearance with only hints of blue remaining. The magazine below the barrel is full length and matches the barrel in appearance. Both surfaces are free of any pitting. Just forward of the receiver the barrel is stamped “38-W.” Just forward of the rear sight is an excellent stamping in two lines that reads “MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO., NEW-HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / PATENTEDOCT. 11, 1887. APRIL 2, 1889.” There is one small ding in the barrel under this stamping but it is nothing that detracts from the weapon. Bore is excellent in cleanliness and strength of rifling.
Frame shows some faint blue, especially on the loading gate. Top of the frame has strong stamping of “MARLIN SAFETY.” Frame surfaces are free of scratches however there is a small blemish behind the loading gate. Under magnification it looks like a very small gouge.
Action is excellent. Lever latch still works properly. Hammer, lever and buttplate were casehardened. Faint color remains. Butt is mostly gray with light wear. Screw heads show light wear.
Wood stock is very nice with just the usual slight signs of wear from use, age and storage. Left side near toe has small blotch where surface finish was worn off.
Rifle bears serial number 43067 on the forward bottom of the frame. This shows the weapon was manufactured in 1890.
Nice clean lever action. [ad]
