This Model 1863 looks to have been brought home after the war, propped in a barn corner and then forgotten. The wood is in excellent condition but all the iron surfaces have a dark patina under surface rust.
The barrel is complete with both sights. Flip-up leaf sights are frozen. “VP” and eagle head markings are visible and the barrel has a very faint date that is unreadable due to the oxidation and surface rust. Model 1855 socket bayonet is attached at the muzzle and frozen in place. Nipple is broken near the base. Eagle on the bolster is clear. Bore is black as pitch but rifling is visible.
Lockplate has a visible 1863 behind the hammer while forward is a strong spread-winged eagle and “US.” over “SPRINGFIELD.” Hammer is correct and still works properly.
Wood stock is dark and excellent. A number of small rub marks are the only signs of wear. Parts of two very faint cartouche marks are visible on the flat opposite the lock. There are no cracks.
All three barrel bands have visible “U” stampings. There are no band springs on this model. All screw heads are good.
Proper ramrod is present but frozen in the channel. [ad]
Extra shipping required due to length of musket with bayonet frozen in place (74").
