The Sharps rifle, a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Presented here is a solid example of the New Model 1863 Sharps rifle that features serial #44266.
Rifle has a 29½” long round barrel and a “straight-breech” type lockplate fitted to its walnut shoulder and fore stock. Barrel address is worn but reads “SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG CO. / HARTFORD, CONN” in front of rear sight. “NEW MODEL 1863” stamped to rear of sight. Flip-up rear sight is complete and retains clear Lawrence patent stamp underneath. Barrel has surface pitting overall. Bore with is clean with good rifling.
The receiver shares similar surface pitting with worn maker marks and patent designations. Right side of lock features Sharps and Lawrence patent marks. Left side has a very worn Sharps patent stamp. Serial number is light but visible on the upper receiver tang.
Breechblock and lever mechanics operate smoothly. Hammer / trigger mechanics are crisp. Iron components match in color and condition. Most screwheads are in good condition; one or two show some wear. Iron patch box in butt stock.
All wood has original deep, rich color. A moderate number of dings and wear commensurate with condition of rest of rifle. There is a 5” long crack running forward from the receiver on the underside of the fore stock. The also is a small repair to the right shoulder of shoulder stock just behind the receiver. No inspector cartouches are visible.
A World War II era European sling is on the rifle.
