Weapon is a .54 single shot muzzle loading percussion rifle manufactured at Harper’s Ferry.
Barrel retains much of its original brown finish. It is worn a bit on the barrel tang and there is a small area of “V” shaped pitting just forward of the first barrel band and near the breech. These imperfections are minor and overall the barrel presents a wonderful appearance. The long range rear sight has the flip-up leaf with a sliding appture that works properly. At front is the usual brass blade sight and mounted on the right side of the muzzle is the stud for attaching the bayonet. Breech is stamped with a very good “VP” over eaglehead. Forward of this is “WW” over “P.” Barrel date on tang is 1855. Left side of the barrel at breech shows vice marks. Bore is very good with strong rifling.
The lockplate is semi-bright with light scattered mottling around the edges. No case colors remain. Forward of the hammer is a very strong, near crisp spread-winged eagle over a small “US” while behind the hammer is an equally good “HARPER’S FERRY” with a date whose last digit is muddled. Date looks to be “1852.” Hammer is correct and the action works well. Original nipple is present.
The wood of the stock is very good. Right side of the butt has a brass patchbox that when opened reveals hole for spare nipple and a single circular recess. Left side of butt has carved initial “J” and a large “H.” The rest of the wood shows light to moderate wear of dings and scratches from age. There is a 2.50 inch closed crack running forward from the first band on the left side. No other markings are visible.
All furniture is of brass with a light patina. Both correct barrel bands are present as is the full length ramrod with threaded tip. Both sling swivels are also present. Screw heads show little wear. [ad]
