This original longarm is a .69 caliber Springfield Model 1842, single-shot, smoothbore muzzleloader in good overall condition.
Gunmetal is plum brown with scattered areas of rust pitting, specifically near the bolster and barrel breech areas. The lockplate surface appears to have been crudely cleaned and exhibits standard markings of the small “eagle motif / US” front of the hammer. Back of hammer is stamped “SPRING / FIELD / 1855” in three lines. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Barrel surface has been cleaned near the breech while the remainder exhibits a pleasing plum sheen. Proof marks “V / P/ Eaglehead” are visible but thin on left side of breech. Barrel tang date stamp on tang is obliterated from pitting. Bore is moderately to heavily pitted with rust and oxidation. Barrel secured to stock with three iron barrel bands and three iron springs. Musket retains both sling swivels, one on the middle band and the second swivel at the front of triggerguard. No inspector marks. “US” stamped on the butt plate tang.
Black walnut stock surface is dark, uncleaned, and shows light scratches, gouges and scuff marks. Shopu8lder stock area has three light surface cracks in the wood. A single, large letter “R” is crudely scratched into the left shoulder. Musket has a button-head ramrod without the threaded tip. An original M1842 smoothbore-musket by Springfield.
