An original Springfield Model 1842 smoothbore .69 caliber musket in good condition. All metal surfaces have been cleaned and are bright.
Barrel surface is speckled with some spots of oxidation. There is a small amount of pitting in the area of the breech. Proofmarks of “V / P” and eaglehead are very good but the barrel date is faint showing only “-847.” Musket also retains its brass blade front sight on the upper barrel band. Bayonet lug is present below the muzzle. Bore is dark and dirty and may clean up some.
Lock has a good spreadwinged eagle stamped over small “US” forward of the hammer and a crisp “SPRING / FIELD / 1847” in a stacked, three-line arrangement back of the hammer. Nipple is original. Mechanics are strong and work properly.
Black walnut stock is in good untouched condition and shows original feathering. Wood is dark but does exhibit several dings, dents and scratches. The flat opposite the lock has one large inspector’s cartouche.
There is a crisp “US” stamped on the butt plate tang. Musket retains its original trumpet type steel ramrod with flat head and threaded tip. Both sling swivels are present. Triggerguard and barrel bands match the rest of the metal. Screw heads show only light wear. [ad]
