AUSTRIAN MODEL 1842 ENGINEERS RIFLE MUSKET

$1,295.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 998-49

Weapon is 48.50 inches long overall with a .70 bright barrel that meas. 33.25 inches long. The barrel surface shows some moderate mottling but no pitting to speak of. The single flip-up leaf rear sight is the same as that found on the 1854 Lorenz rifle musket. The iron blade front sight is attached to the barrel and sits in a notch made for it on the inside of the front barrel band. These weapons started life as tube-locks but most were converted to percussion at the start of the Civil War. This is one of those muskets. The conversion was done by filling the touch hole and braising on a raised bolster with a nipple screwed into it on the top right side of the barrel. Beneath the muzzle is a Laukart system for attaching a bayonet. Bore of the barrel is clean with very good rifling.

Lock is bright with rounded ends and beveled edge. Large hammer has ball shaped toe with some light surface rust at top along with some light pitting. Action works well and original nipple is present. Small Austrian eagle is stamped at rear of the hammer while forward of the hammer is the upper half of the number “8” but nothing else.

Beech wood stock is in excellent condition with the usual pronounced light grain. Lines are good and there is a small bit of wear along the ramrod channel but otherwise the stock is very nice. Left side of butt is minus the cheek rest which is correct for the Engineer’s model.

All three barrel bands are present with the band springs and are bright to match the rest of the iron on the weapon. Bands have numerous assembly or inspection marks. Both sling swivels are present, one is attached to the middle band and the other is on a mount screwed into the triggerguard tang.

Iron ramrod is full length with the threaded tip on one end and the cup style head on the other.

Nice looking Civil War import weapon.  [AD]
