This Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle musket is complete, and in fine condition. Produced by the Union Arms Company in New York City.
All gun metal on this rifle is matching dark, mottled gray/black color. A strong spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster. Maker’s stamp, “U.A. CO. / NEW YORK” is in front of the hammer and a worn “1863” behind hammer. The 40” long barrel has the original two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Barrel is faintly dated “1863” at the breech. Proof marks “V / P / eaglehead” faint on left facet of the breech. Barrel bore clean and clear with good rifling. Screw heads are good. Butt plate bears a weakly stamped with “US”. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Retains its original swelled shank, tulip-head steel ramrod with a threaded end. Barrel bands, sling swivels, etc. are all in good condition.
Black walnut full stock is in very good condition overall. Has clean edge contours on the flat opposite the hammer. Stock exhibits two faint inspector cartouches on the flat. There are no cracks and only very minor dings and dents from use and storage. Wood retains a dark color and finish.
A fine contract musket of the Civil War. [jet]
