AUSTRIAN MODEL 1842 ENGINEER’S RIFLE

$1,695.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 998-165

This is basically a shortened Model 1842 musket.  This measures 48 ½” overall, with a 33 ½” round barrel; .73 caliber. Converted to percussion, this had a new breech added with a bolster brazed in place. Numerous inspection stamps are located around the breech as well as the name “BENTZ”. A flip-up rear sight is dovetailed into the barrel and a thick blade sight at the muzzle is partially enclosed by the upper barrel band. Bore is bright and clean with strong rifling. All furniture is brass and has a nice dark patina. Three barrel bands hold the barrel in place; they in turn are secured by band springs. The lock plate has beveled edges and smooth face. Remains of an Austrian eagle is stamped behind the hammer. The date stamp under the bolster, “848” represents manufacture in 1848.

Swivels are attached at the middle barrel band and on the trigger guard tang. The original ramrod features a large cupped head and opposite end threaded. Most individual parts bear sub-inspector stamps.

The stock is decent with one thin crack on the underside that runs along the ramrod channel.  Some blemishes to the dark finish on the butt.

At least 23,000 of these weapons were sold to the U.S. Ordnance Department during the Civil War. [jet]
