Longarm is a M1816 smoothbore musket made by R. & J. D. Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. It is estimated that this company manufactured only 600 of these weapons.
Musket is a .69 caliber and retains all its original parts in very nice condition. The iron lock is semi-bright with some browning behind the hammer and light mottling on its face. Lock is round in the front and pointed at the rear. Lockplate is crisply marked in front of the hammer with a small “U.S.” over a spread-winged eagle with “JOHNSON” in an arc below it. Behind the hammer is a crisp “1832” with “MIDDLE CONN.” Frizzen has proper bend at top and the pan is brass which is also correct. Hammer has a replaced flint. Action strong and works well. All metal parts of the lock have a matching light patina.
Musket has a 42” long round barrel secured to the walnut stock by three iron bands. Barrel surface is bright but turning brown in places with light pitting around the touch hole. Breech of barrel is strongly stamped with “US” over “AH” over “P” and the tang is crisply stamped “1832.” Brass blade front sight is mounted on the rear most arc of the forward double band and the bayonet lug is missing from the top of the muzzle. Bore is dark and dirty with light pitting as is usual.
A large trigger guard has the lower sling swivel attached with the usual ball shaped device. The middle band supports the second swivel. Original button-head ramrod is present with threaded tip.
Nice dark walnut stock is untouched. It is correct with a low comb. There is one strong cartouche visible opposite the lock that bears the clear initials “NWS” in an oval. The stock has some minor dings and chips consistent with age. There is an old 2.50 inch long chip of wood missing from the edge of the raised platform on which the lock sits. The area affected is to the top rear of the lock. However the wood in this area perfectly matches the rest of the stock.
Screw heads are good.
Buttplate has a nice “US” stamping. [ad]
